Near the city of Budapest in Hungary sits Lake Balaton, the largest lake in central Europe and one of the primary bodies of water in the landlocked country of Hungary. Lake Balaton has had a significant impact on the climate of the surrounding area: it is believed to create an environment for considerably more precipitation than in other regions of Hungary, and the climate itself resembles that of a Mediterranean region, despite the fact that Hungary lies several hundred miles from the Mediterranean Sea.
