Conclusion
Unique to the region of Normandy in Northern France, the Norman language descended from the family of Romance languages. These languages include French and the now-obsolete language of Picard. After the Viking settlement of Normandy, many of the Norman peoples relocated: to England, to Canada, and across the English Channel to other parts of France. For a time during the Renaissance, Norman functioned as a prestigious language for those traveling between France and England. After the seventeenth century, French became the dominant language of all France, including Normandy, and the Norman language slowly diminished.
